Buried Memories

Buried Memories

Part 2 of Abdo’s Series “Darkness Is My Ally” (sequel) | Buried Memories

I woke up to the muffled voices around me. Everything looked so blurry.

“She is awake Dr. Smith.” I heard someone

Smith is Aaron’s younger brother. He is a bioscientist and has worked for the facility for years. One of the most charming guys I have known. His deep blue eyes, dark hair, and rare color skin tone made him look even more charming and alluring.

Buried Memories

I rubbed my eyes to get a better look at my surroundings. I was in a medical room surrounded by machines attached to my arms and head.

“Go Inform Megan,” Smith said to one of the two nurses in the room.

She nodded and left the room. Smith came near my bed and did some check-ups, then he ordered the other nurse.

“Inform the authority, she is awake and fine.”

I was still trying to think what happened, and how I got here when Megan came running into the room, tear falling down her cheeks.

“You are finally awake, I thought I lost you.” And then something clicked in my head.

“WHAT HAPPENED IN THAT ROOM?” I almost yelled at her.

“Tell her to stay calm,” Smith said annoyingly.

Though he is a nice guy, we had a  past. I was rough on him.

“Please Suze! Calm down, you need rest.” Said Megan. I looked at her.

“You have been unconscious for two days.”

“What!! did you say two days?” I asked shockingly.

“But you are absolutely fine now.” She smiled softly.

“Megan, is it him?” My question turned her smile into a frown. She nodded in response and pressed her lips tightly. As she was trying to hold something.

“Now tell me what hap…”

Smith interrupted. “Sorry to disturb you both, but Dr. Suzan you need some more rest and you will be good to go, here take this pill.” I took that pill without saying a single word. My head was spinning.

“And Dr. Megan you can have a little break, and come back after an hour.”

Buried Memories

“Well enough Doctor!”

They both left the room quietly. I laid there alone recalling what happened in the room. I remembered his devilish smile, and the feeling of dread, his voice filled in my body. I don’t know when I fall asleep while thinking about all this.

When I woke up again, it was almost afternoon. Megan was sitting next to me.

“Hey good afternoon,” she said with a big smile on her face.

“Afternoon,” I replied, and before she could say anything I asked.

“Now tell me what happened there, in that room?”

Her facial expressions changed.  “Umm… Suze everything was alright when you entered the room, but right after you sat on the chair the cameras stopped working. There was just a dark screen displaying on the monitor, and there was static sound on the speakers, then all of a sudden the entire system shut off. Everyone started to panic. We tried to open the door, but nothing has worked. It took us less than two minutes to get the system back on track, and then we saw you were laying on the floor unconscious. And when the guards were able to open the door, they brought you out.”

I was startled, but that didn’t stop me from asking about him.

“And him? Did you get any information?”

She frowned. “Sorry, Suze but he hasn’t even opened his eyes in two days, neither he ate a single bite since. He seems lifeless while sitting there.”

Buried Memories

“What? Are you being serious?”

“Yes, Suze! I know I sound crazy, but this is the truth”.

I just sat there looking at her unable to comprehend, who he is or If I may say, “what” he is. Megan didn’t say anything and got up to leave the room.

“Megan.” I was drowning in the deep thoughts when I called her name.

“Yes?” She turned back. “Do you need anything?”

“Any news about Aaron?”

“Yes, Mr. Aaron will be here by tomorrow morning.”

I nodded in response and she left the room. I started to think about it all over again when Dr. Smith came into the room breaking the silence with his laugh. He is the kind of person who would laugh even in the most serious situations. He walked to my bed still laughing for God knows what reason and that annoyed the hell out of me.

“Will you please stop now ?”

“Yes, doctor.” He replied trying to hold his laugh.

“And get these things off of me, I have already wasted a lot of my time on this bed.”

“As if I asked you to waste your time here.” He murmured.

“Excuse me, what?” I asked in an unpleasant tone.

“Nurse get her ready to leave.” He ordered and left the room.

The nurse handed me a bottle of pills. “In case you feel any kind of weakness.” She said.

I took it knowing the fact that I will need it sooner or later.

I went to the authorities to ask them to allow me to interview him today and after a long conversation they allowed me to interview him again with a guard to protect me in case anything goes wrong, but I didn’t care I just wanted to know about him. As I was leaving, I saw Megan running towards me.
“Sorry, Suze I forgot to inform you that your Mother called multiple times during the last two days. She is worried about you.”

“Okay, but how did she find out?”

“She.. she called later that day so… so Suze I told her everything.” She said hesitantly.

“MEGAN! WHA..”

But before I could finish She started speaking fastly.

“Suze I am sorry please don’t be mad sorry sorry sorry.”

I didn’t respond to her I wouldn’t want to waste even a second with her.

On my way, I was thinking about how to ask him questions. How to trick him to answer the things I want to know. In a few moments, I was standing right in front of the door. I gave questioning look to the guard standing at the door. He opened the door, and I stepped inside accompanying the other guard expecting to be hit by that same fragrance, but there was none everything was normal except that now he was looking at me, smiling. I walked to the chair and sat down.

“I think we don’t need any kind of formalities, so I’ll ask you a question and you will answer it straight, and to the point.” He nodded with some mysterious smile on his face. He had a   magnificent smile, but still, it made me feel uneasy.

Buried Memories

“Tell me your name,” I asked looking as confident as possible. his smile turned into a grin.

“Mortifer, I am Mortifer, the bringer of death.” His voice echoed in the empty room. I don’t know why I sat there unable to ask anything for a while. When the reason I was hired,  is because getting such information is a piece of cake for me, but no question was coming in my mind at that time. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.

“How many people have you killed?” It came out of my mouth so unexpectedly, as if those were not my words. When I uttered these words I could swear I saw a glow in his eyes, for a second. I looked at the guard to see if he noticed anything but he stood there as if nothing happened.

“Countless people died in my hands. Thousands of them killed themselves out of fear, but I enjoyed their screams, their pain, I enjoyed every second of it, when they cried for air. It is a source of my pleasure. I felt sad for all those people.” he continued.  ” I can still feel, the beating hearts of all those children, on my palm. Crushing slowly,  heartbeat dying second by second. But you know doctor what was the actual fun, their faces, and those tears begging for mercy, begging me to spare them. I enjoyed that the most.”

I couldn’t listen to him anymore he was playing with my mind trying to break me. I couldn’t take it anymore I couldn’t make eye contact with him. I felt sick and disgusted. I stood up and proceeded to leave when he said something that shattered my heart.

“But this one person I truly enjoyed as I cut him to pieces while he was still breathing. He begged for his life. He wanted to live for his family, but that didn’t stop me. He was..” He paused and I felt as if my heart skipped a beat.

“He was your father Dr. Suzan”.
