Raat Akeli Hai (2020) is a NETFLIX Original Film, Starring: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Radhika Apte, Khalid Tyabji, Released on July 31, 2020.
Bollywood is undoubtedly infrequent in making movies with a phenomenally intriguing plot combined with a classic mystery thriller. “Raat Akeli Hai” is one of those movies which keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last second.
A charade set in the confines of a haveli. The setting is of a classic locked-room mystery. When an old man is getting married to a young bride, which makes the entire family a suspect. Its story is told in the context of police officer Jatil Yadav, played by the legitimate tough actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
Raghubeer Singh, a powerful and politically connected businessman in Kanpur is found dead on the night of his wedding to Radha (played by Radhika Apte), his young mistress, whom he was marrying after the death of his first wife.
This film is a complete murder mystery and a thriller implanted in a complex family drama. The case went to inspector Jatil Yadav (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), who appears on the crime scene exhibiting stereotypical police arrogance, forcing his way through haveli doors, and smacking resistant family members.
He seems like a cop who recklessly accepts challenges, and enjoys and adores his profession. Jatil Yadav tells the family members vigorously, “Yeh jo kaand Hua Hai Na, Hum Karenge Uski Jaanch (this incident that has taken place, I’m going to investigate.). But the situation becomes so complicated that the investigation makes everyone suspect including Radha.
And he realizes that this case is too tricky to solve. As we mainly see this case through Jatil’s point of view. Raat Akeli Hai does a splendid job of bringing the audience’s and Jatil’s perspective into line. At some point in time we realize that we know a few things that he doesn’t: for instance the murderer of Raghubeer’s wife, Later, we find out that Jatil knows something that we don’t.
Five years ago Raghubeer’s first wife was killed in a hit-and-run incident (from the film’s opening sequence, we know it was murder). A brief flashback reveals that Jatil and Radha had met five years ago, on a train; When she was trying to jump from a running train, but he pulled her back. The train sequence, apparently makes the audience believe that Radha was on her way to being sold to Raghubeer by her father, She was as depressed in the past as she is now.
The film sequences built such a relationship between these two people where one keeps giving up on her life and the other is determined to save her.
The film explores corruption, violence, the connection between politicians and their aides, police, and state, Yadav’s stubbornness to find the truth regardless of the cost he had to bear. Yadav finally cracks the case, near the end of the movie.
The big mystery reveals at the end, and the film kept you involved and intrigued the whole time. However, you realize that ‘who’ did the murder is not as enthralling as the ‘why’ the murder of a rich and influential person was committed.
Two hours and 40 minutes is certainly a long duration but the pace and how the story unfurls and gets exciting with each new enigmatic information doesn’t make you feel exhausted. Nawazuddin’s brilliant performance carries this film on its shoulders and All of the other cast contributed to making the movie an exhilarating watch.
Radhika Apte is a ‘mysterious girl’ who was hitting the audience in the right spot. You will be wondering till the end either she is a victim or an assailant.
The plot of Raat Akeli Hai is remarkable and it seems like the director and writers have sketched it out very briefly and with diligence. If you love watching murder mysteries. Raat Akeli Hai must definitely be in your priority. It’s a jaw-dropping thriller that will leave you completely mesmerized and persistently speculating who the murderer is.
